Heirloom Fruit Tree Grafting Methods

Its printed title: The Biomechanics, Genetics, and Ecology of Traditional Fruit Tree Propagation: Preserving Heirloom Scions via Wild Rootstock Grafting

Grafting old fruit varieties onto wild seedling stocks: crab apple, wild pear, wild cherry, mahaleb and blackthorn. It traces the apple to Malus sieversii of the Tian Shan, reports that nearly 30 per cent of wild apples in northern Britain are hybrids, explains self-incompatibility and how a graft union forms, and describes the meadow orchard of tall trees 8 to 10 m apart. It says more about why grafting works than about how to make the cut, and its triploid pages repeat the orchard report.

  • 13 confirmed
  • 1 marked for safety
  • O10 confirmed Safety Pear on quince: prunasin → HCN at union kills join; unknown wild roots may do the same
  • O13 confirmed Standard on wild/seedling root: first fruit ~8–10 yr ("up to a decade"), life 80–120 yr, carbon peak at 18 yr; dwarf orchards replanted every 15–25 yr
  • O15 confirmed Apple gametophytic self-incompatibility; seedlings never true; Tian Shan / Malus sieversii; Silk Road
  • O18 confirmed M9 East Malling 1910s, most planted, one third size, fruits yr 2–3, permanent support; cavitation on sand; Gala/Elstar/Rubinette fail without fertigation
  • O20 confirmed Malus sylvestris: smooth leaf underside, small sour fruit, sometimes thorny; ~30 % hybrids in N. Britain, ID fails 36 %
  • O22 confirmed Apple pips need 2–3 months cold stratification; graftable at pencil thickness in a year
  • O23 confirmed Pear on Pyrus pyraster (dry sand); cherry on P. avium or P. mahaleb (dry lime); plum on P. cerasifera or P. spinosa (suckers)
  • O24 confirmed Healing calendar 0–3, 5–14, 15–20, 21–45+ days; cambium one cell layer
  • O25 confirmed Scion collection Dec–Feb, pencil-thick one-year wood, store 1–4 °C damp; graft late Mar–Apr at bud swell with dormant scion
  • O26 confirmed Whip-and-tongue cuts (3–4 cm, tongue one third down), cleft with two wedge scions, chip bud in late summer; tape and wax
  • O28 confirmed Localised incompatibility (Honeycrisp/G41 snaps) and translocated (5 yr, leaf curl, reddening, dieback)
  • O29 confirmed Streuobstwiese 8–10 m, Hochstamm trunk 1.8 m, hay/sheep; rarest landscape
  • O33 confirmed Three varieties; triploid needs three others in same/adjacent RHS group
